Years before “The Larry Sanders Show“ came this Canadian-made sitcom taking place behind the scenes of the fictional “David Steinberg Show,“ starring real-life comic David Steinberg. Like the later Garry Shandling series, the show alternates between backstage antics and big-name guest stars on stage. The series is best remembered for co-starring many later comic powerhouses such as John Candy, Martin Short and Dave Thomas, years before they did “SCTV.“

On Location is a series from Home Box Office. The series premiered in 1976 and features stand-up comedy with George Carlin, David Brenner, Redd Foxx, Rich Little, Robin Williams, Phyllis Diller, Buddy Hackett, Billy Crystal, Pat Cooper and more. In addition to showing select comedians, On Location featured comedy shows such as the annual Young Comedians Show, comedy club shows and more. From 1982 to 1986, a version of the "HBO In Space" program opening sequence was used to introduce the series.

A look at the life and work of Canadian comedy icon David Steinberg.

David Steinberg is shown at the concert at Toronto's York University, whipping through routines keyed to a college audience. He delivers some one-liners, a few homilies on politics, a recollection of early non-sex, a bit about writing exam papers in utter ignorance of the topic and ends up with John Candy in a skit about a psychiatrist. Also included is a hilarious take-off on the award- winning film "My Dinner With Andre," entitled "My Dinner With Duddy." Mr. Steinberg and Mr. Candy, big-time comedians, meet in a delicatessen and exchange heartfelt inanities about creativity, soberly paralleling the real thing.
